archipelago

26 June, 2026

there is this cool way to play video games online,
that my best friend ryou told me about,
where you're in a "lobby" with other people,
and you are all playing different games. all the games are randomizer runs,
and you depend on each other's games to unlock progress in your game!

for example,
when i kill a boss in my Dark Souls 2 game, it might unlock Hardmode for your Terraria game.
similarly, you getting the Dye achievement on Terraria might give me the Blacksmith's key for Dark Souls 2!

it's called archipalego.

here is my lobby:

it was a limited-time lobby, with 60 games and 30 people.

I finished my game yesterday.
it had been a while since I played Dark Souls 2,
it's a game I've completed many times over, but never with mods or randomizers.
it's my spiritual second home to me, it felt like visiting old family a bit.
which is strange to say

what's cool is that you get a live log of all other players, on their own games, and their item unlocks:

ryou played rimworld.

they showed me, it looks like this:

in archipelago, you still get items from others when you are offline.
this means that when you log in on a new day, you get showered with items, and it reminds you of christmas morning:

my cool guy in the worst level designed in video games:

it was fun.

nothing like being socially obligated by 30 other people to Hurry Up and Complete The Game.
if there was to be a next time, I'm curious about Terraria.
it's possible for Hard Mode to unlock before you even meet your first boss.
